Sunday Night ER visit

Yep, that's right, Sunday night (the 8th) we made a quick trip to the ER.

Here is what happened.

Eric and Kaiden had gone out Sunday night to push a little bit of snow with the new snowplow that we recently purchased.  After they were done.  They were unhooking the plow from the truck.
For some reason the plow would not come off very easy, so the boys decided to put a piece of wood under the front of the plow to make it unhook from the truck easier.  After they got the wood in place they realized that it wasn't very stable so in the process of re-adjusting it, somehow (right after Eric got done telling him to not get his fingers under the plow) Kaiden ended up with his hand under the plow when it was set back down.  It took a little bit for him to realize what happened.  By then Eric had walked around the plow.  Kaiden finally started to say "OWWWW".  Eric immediately knew what had happened.  He quickly ran around and lifted the plow off of Kaiden's fingers.  When Kaiden pulled them out, his index and middle finger on his right hand were smashed flat.

They both hurried to the house and when Kaiden came in crying I knew something was wrong.  He showed me his fingers which were bruised and the tips were both pointing straight up.  My stomach dropped and I had to look away.  Ugg, I hate that feeling and as a mom you never want to see your kids in pain.

We all quickly grabbed our shoes, coats, and a frozen bag of corn (because our ice machine is not working), and ran out the door.  It was 6:00 pm and dark, the roads were snow covered and icy.  So I was driving as slow/fast as I could.  Just 4 miles from our house I see red and blue flashing lights in my rear view mirror. My first thought was "Really? I wasn't even speeding!"   The officer walked up and asked where we were headed.  Eric and I both said that we were headed to the ER.  The officer seemed a little surprised but still asked to see my drivers licence, then informed me that I had a headlight out.  "Ok, I thought so let us go" but no, he decided that he needed to run my licence.  So we sat in the car and waited, and waited, and waited for what seemed like forever while Kaiden was sitting in the back seat trying really hard not to break down.  Finally he came back and then told me that I have a break light out too.  "Ok, thank you officer."  Then we were on our way again.

We made it to the ER and got checked in.  They gave Kaiden some pain meds, by pill, he has never been able to take a pill before but first sip and they were both gone,  I was so excited and so was he pretty soon he was starting to feel a lot better.
See, doesn't he look like he is feeling great?  But really the meds did help a lot.

Here is a picture of what his finger looked like. Ewww!!

Then they took him in for Xrays.  We found out that only one finger was broken and not both.  Blessing!!

They tried setting the bone under an Xray machine but the way that it was broken it wouldn't stay.

They decided that they would send us home for the night and do surgery at about 6:30 in the morning.  They gave me some more pain meds (pills) and told us that he could not have anything to eat or drink after midnight and then we headed home and dropped Kelsey off at my parents.  I was supposed to get a call that night to confirm the time of surgery. After we got home at about 10:00 I got a call from the Dr. saying that he still hadn't got confirmation but to still plan on 6:30.  So we put Kaiden to bed and then at 12:00 am I woke him up to give him his pills.  But the pills did not go down....at all.  In fact they came back up really quickly.  I didn't have anything else to give him and didn't know what to do.  But he was so tired so he just snuggled up and went back to sleep.

About a half an hour later he was standing by my bed crying because his finger was hurting really bad.  I tried everything I could think of but we ended up spending the entire night up with Kaiden in so much pain.  It was killing me.  I hate feeling so helpless.  I finally texted the Dr. at 4:00 to see what to do.  He told me that I could give him some Motrin and Tylenol. And that it looked like we were not going to be able to do surgery as early as we had hoped but he didn't know what time yet. And that he would let me know when he found out what time we needed to come in.  I had some Motrin, so I gave him some of that but it didn't seem to even touch it.  At 4:30 I jumped in the shower so that I would be ready to head to the hospital as soon as they called. At 6:00 I got Kaiden as comfortable as I could and headed to the local gas station to get some Tylenol.

When I walked outside I realized that it was soooooo cold.  My car almost didn't start.  The temperature on my mirror kept dropping as I drove.  It finally stopped at -20 degrees.  SERIOUSLY!!!  -20!!!!  It was sooooo cold!

The first gas station didn't have Tylenol so I ran to the only other option that I had.  Luckly they had some.  I hurried home imagining my little man sitting in the chair crying waiting for me to hurry home.  When I walked in the door this is what I found.  He was out!

Ahhh, I felt like I could finally breath.  He kept moaning and wrestling around in his sleep so I knew that he was in pain but he was sleeping and I knew that he needed that really bad.  I got Keira out the door to school and then laid down on the chair next to Kaiden.  I was so exhausted but was really concerned for him so I tried to sleep but every noise he made I would wake up and check on him.  I got a couple of texts from the Dr. to see how Kaiden was doing and to let me know that I needed to come in around 11:00.  Kaiden slept from about 6:00 until about 10:30 when I finally woke him up.  By then the Dr. said that it was too late to take any meds because they would affect the medicine in surgery.  So we headed up to the hospital at 10:30.

Kaiden has a horrible fear of needles and so he was really concerned about getting a shot or an IV.  He asked if I would see if he could wait until he was asleep in surgery before he got any shots or his IV.  The nurse said that that was fine as long as he was doing ok.  The poor kid was in so much pain but he really didn't want the IV.
He was so tough and stuck it out until they finally came for him at 2:00!!!

He was in surgery for about an hour and a half.  They finally came and got me at about 3:30 to go sit with him in recovery.  The nurse said that they wanted him to be in recovery for about an hour.  And then if he could drink water and go to the bathroom then he could go home.  This is what he did the entire time I was in there with him.
He started feeling a little nauseous so by the time that he finally got over that it was 6:00 before we were getting ready to leave the hospital.  I can't believe how exhausting it is to sit in the hospital waiting.  After being up all night the night before and then not sleeping much in the morning and then sitting all day at the hospital I was beat! To say the least!!!

But by the time we got home Kaiden got a little bit of toast into his body and he was feeling really good.
It was so good to have him home and to see that smile again.  It made me so happy.

Kaiden has had the best attitude throughout this whole experience.   And he is healing great!  He will have these two pins in until the middle of January.
We are so grateful for all of the blessings that have happened in the process of this whole thing.   It could have been a lot worse, Kaiden should have broke at least 2, if not 3 fingers, we had excellent Dr.'s performing the surgery, he should have been in more pain after the surgery, and his finger is healing amazingly well.

So grateful!!!

Girls Day Out

A couple of weekends ago.  Eric had taken Kaiden snowmobiling with him.  Which Kaiden absolutely LOVES!! (Yes, all caps!)

So I decided to take the girls to the free matinee.  And feeling overly ambitious I also let them pick a friend to bring with them.
Kelsey brought her best friend and cousin Cambrie.  These two are so fun together!

Keira brought her really sweet, good friend, Resee, who I found out really quickly is very camera shy.
We had a lot of fun and we will definitely be doing it again.  Maybe next time Kaiden will be with us too!

Kaiden's Birthday

So Kaiden's birthday was back in November but, hey, at least I'm getting it posted....right?

Kaiden turned 11 this year.   AHHHH!!  How did that happen?  Seriously!  He can not be 11 yet.  He isn't old enough.

Either way we had a birthday party for him.

I took him out of school and we went to his favorite place for lunch.  Subway (not my favorite but it's was his day) Luckily my mom had some time that day so she was able to come with us and that just made his whole day. I wish that I would have thought about it and taken a picture.
Later that day I took balloons and treats (Hersey's kisses & Tootsie rolls) into his class.  Can I just say that I really wish we could bring homemade treats.  I found so many fun ideas.  Oh well.

For his birthday dinner he chose tacos.  Yumm!!  He eats them with just tortilla, cheese and olives.  The rest of us ate them the normal way and they were delicious.

Later it was time to open some presents.

He got his favorite....Legos.  Before I knew it the entire living room was covered in a million tiny little Lego pieces.  I wish I would have taken a picture of that too because it was really impressive.

Being that Kaiden is now 11 he has moved on from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts.  He also received his arrow of light. Which is a really great achievement.  (the pictures are really blurry because forgot my good camera so we were using my phone with the lights out)

Crossing over from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts

With his new Scout leader and another 11 year old scout
Kaiden's Webelo leader made this cool vinyl display and Kaiden and I put all of his Cub Scout awards on it.  I think it turned out really cool.

Kaiden also recieved the Over Achiever Award.  See that 20 badge and all 20 of those pins.
Most Cub Scouts don't get that.
We do "Friend" birthday parties on their odd year.  So this year was Kaiden's friend party and he was so exited.  And so were his friends.

My awesome sister even came along with me to help with the party.  Her and I ended up playing our own game.

As you can tell, she is quite a bit better than I am at bowling.

Finally, last but not least we had a party at my parents house, where he requested mashed potatoes and fried chicken for dinner.   Kaiden got more Lego's...

A dart board (that became Eric and his nightly competition game).  And a few more cool items.

He had an awesome birthday.  We are so proud of that kid and the really great kid that he is becoming.  He is growing up right before eyes.  And we are loving every minute of it.  I just wish he would slow down just a little bit.  It's going by way to fast.
